The Drugs of Microbial Origin

چکیده
Tremendous progress has been made in the past decade in the development of new disease-preventing agents. Foremost among such agents arc penicillin and strc^ptomycin, both of microbial origin. Other antibiotic substances of siinilar origin, such as chloromycetin^ aurcomycin, and terramycin^ are becoming especially valuable. Still others, including bacitracin, subtilin, ]:>olymyxin, and circulin, oiler jjromisc for special apj)lications. Although the new disease-preventing drugs are saving untold lives, there are yet many afflictions which take their toll and remain unchallenged. The quest for useful drugs among the byproducts of micro-organisms was tremendously advanced by the findings of Professor Alexander Fleming, a bacteriologist working at St. Mary's Hospital, London, in 1928. Investigating staphylococci, which cause boils, carbuncles, and septicemia in man, he observed that a contaminating bkiegreen Penicillium inhibited the growth of these disease-producing germs. As a result of his discovery of the antibiotic penicillin, attention was drawn to the possibility of employing the product of one microbe to control or prevent the growth of another. It took the destruction of war, hov/ever, and its quickened search for new therapeutic agents, to bring penicillin into its rightful prominence as one of the greatest medical and scientific discoveries of all time.

Aims: Any drug product made in the pharmacy, hospital or factory may be infection with microbes. This infection can be originated from raw materials or during manufacture of the product. It is also important to study the physical and chemical properties and stability of compound products. Materials & Method: In this study, a specific sample of a compound drug was ordered to 63 drugstores with ...
متن کاملMicrobial Transformations of Plant Origin Compounds as a Step in Preparation of Highly Valuable Pharmaceuticals
The aim of the paper is to present microbial transformation reactions as a step in the preparation of drugs or their key intermediates from plant derived compounds. Described are some successful applications of microbial transformation processes for preparation of steroid drugs and/or their important intermediates as well as some microbial transformations of terpenes, alkaloids, flavonoids and ...
متن کاملMICROBIAL CHAIN DEGRADATION OF CHOLESTEROL BY ARTHROB ACTER SIMPLEX
Because of the importance of microbial metabolites of cholesterol as precursors in the synthesis of steroidal drugs, we decided to study the ability of Arthrobacter simplex to degrade cholesterol. Arthrobacter simplex cleaves the side chain of cholesterol in the presence of 2,2'-dipyridyl and produces 4-androstene-3,17- dione (AD) and androsta- 1,4-diene-3,17-dione(ADD). Two other intermedi...
متن کاملMICROBIAL TRANSFORMATION OF CHOLESTEROL BY MYCOBACTERIUM SMEGMATIS
Mycobacterium smegmatis PTCC 1307 (CIP 73.26) was used as a microbial agent to produce androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione (ADD) and androst-4-ene-3,17-dione, two useful precursors in the synthesis of steroid drugs. The side chain of cholesterol, as the substrate, was selectively cleaved in the presence of five enzyme inhibitors. An intermediate structure with intact side chain, cholest-4-ene-3-one, ...
متن کاملCompatibility of prescribed antibiotics to patients with pelvic inflammatory diseases with microbial sensitivity test in Duhok, Iraq
Background: Pelvic inflammatory disease is a clinical syndrome that has wide range of infections and inflammatory diseases of the upper female genital tract. Microbiological researches revealed that multiple bacteria have been identified as causative agents and several types of antibiotics are required to cover causative pathogens. The choice of an appropriate treatment mostly depended on antim...
